Preventing Depression

Following a healthy lifestyle will prevent and reduce the overall chances of depression coming back. Antidepressants and psychotherapy can also reduce the chance of suffering from depression again.

One of the most important things that one can do is to keep in contact with people and to maintain a close support system of family and friends.

The following self-care tips can be followed regardless of the type or severity of depression:

  • Exercise on a regular basis.
  • Follow a nutritious and healthy diet.
  • Avoid marijuana, alcohol, and other drugs.
  • Follow a regular sleeping pattern.
  • Practice relaxation techniques, like meditation, yoga, or tai chi.
  • Eat more omega-3 fatty acids. These are found in certain fish like mackerel, tuna, salmon, or from certain supplements.
  • Talk to a member of the clergy.
  • Spend as much time possible with family and friends.
